Seraph found himself suspended in his dreams, floating effortlessly against the darkness with neither a start nor a destination, just an empty, empty void. He wondered to himself if this was what sleep felt like, until something finally caught his eye.

A bright light flickered across the sky with so little warning Seraph barely had time to shield his eyes, burning now from such a shift. Pupils still dilating, he squinted through the cracks as much as his eyes allowed. It was blurry, but Seraph could barely make it out as he continued adjusting to the intrusion of light that smacked his face and singed his retinas.

A horizon? Curiosity had already set in. He didn’t need the voice in his head that told him to go. He was already too interested in the golden radiance that welcomed him with a warm embrace.

Drawing closer, Seraph could finally make out what had appeared—a golden gate so tall he couldn’t see the top. Seraph chuckled. It was funny how he always found himself back to a set of doors containing secrets he so wished to unearth but were always out of reach. This door, however, had bars, an opening from which to peer and peek. Leaning closer, he squinted through the radiating light and through the cracks, hoping to see just what was hiding behind it.

Nothing.

“What’s this?” He tried looking once more. Again, he found himself staring at nothing. “The lights are too bright to see through…” He sighed, placing a hand on the bar to give one final peek.

Or maybe your soul is too dark, his head shrieked.

Alarmed, Seraph lunged backward, falling on his rump, onto ground that hadn’t previously been there. Ooph!

“What was that?”

Grey. From his touch, the light faded and dimmed until the golden brilliance that had felt so warm and welcoming shunned him, turned its back on him until all that was left was a thick, heavy grey. A drizzle showered him and clouds whooshed by with minds of their own. A new light came, one that didn’t shine indefinitely but rather flickered across the sky and vanished as soon as it showed. Seraph looked around, seeing only a swirling wind of echoes, delusions, and thunder...

Or was it thunder? Seraph shook his head, then corrected himself. It hadn’t been thundering that boomed against the air, but laughter.

Like quicksand, Seraph felt the ground beneath him giving in. He was sinking. Looking down, he found himself being sucked in by the same black ooze he bled, arms reaching out as they tugged at his pants and gripped at his ankles. There was no time to think or struggle. All logic gave way with the ground until he found himself drowning in the darkness again.

Choking on sludge, Seraph held his arms out at full length and waved hurriedly for a surface, an opening from which to take in air. He could feel his already lifeless body growing weaker still, his pale face experiencing the first color it had felt in a while—blue. His eyes retreated to the back of their lids.
